TOPIC: Management of periodontitis in general dental practice

SYNOPSIS:
This lecture will provide a practical overview of periodontal management for general dental practitioners, including assessment and diagnosis within the current classification system, as well as key principles of non-surgical therapy and adjunctive approaches. Indications for surgical intervention will also be discussed.
Through clinical cases, the clinician’s role across all stages of care will be discussed, from comprehensive assessment and diagnosis to active treatment and long-term maintenance care.

- Apply a structured approach to periodontal assessment and diagnosis using the current classification framework.
- Integrate risk assessment into treatment planning and clinical decision-making.
- Deliver effective non-surgical periodontal therapy, incorporating practical clinical strategies and appropriate adjunctive approaches.
- Recognise the indications for surgical periodontal intervention and determine when specialist referral is appropriate.
- Appraise the role of periodontal stability in achieving predictable restorative and aesthetic outcomes
